Arnold Masden clam rocking chair 1960s original genuine

A genuine and rare circa 1960s rocking chair. The wood and grain has beautiful colours/mix of light brown and gold throughout, featuring a solid scandanavian birch or beech timber. Note this is not a new or remake reproduction, an original MCM make from the 50-60s

This rare and stunning rocking chair will come fully restored and recovered in any fabric you like including the popular shearling sheepskin. We suspect the frame and timber is beech and will come fully restored, sanded and natural oil wax finish. We suspect this version may have actually been manufactured in Sweden although this was imported via a MCM furniture shop no longer operating in Sydney about 15 years ago. Current images show this chair as is pre restoration, however do a google search on the different fabrics and finishes for your customisation.

Background: The Clam chair or ‘Muslingestole’ is arguably the most mysterious piece of Danish furniture ever made, but now new evidence has come out about its true origin, according to this information, the Clam was not designed by Philip Arctander, but by the furniture upholsterer Arnold Madsen.

To the best of our knowledge, rocking clams were never produced by any official manufacturer. It’s a bit complicated with these Clam chairs. Swedish copyright laws were really weak in the 50’s, and none of the Swedish chairs were official Madsen chairs, rather “inspired by”. We are certain almost certain this chair was produced in Sweden, probably in the Småland region. But several manufacturers made clam-looking chairs, and it’s extremely difficult to tell them apart. The wooden frames were produced by some workshops (Sune Johansson, G Åberg, JIO Möbler etc etc), and were then sold to local upholsterers to be upholstered

Either way this is a banger and we are extremely lucky to have this original masterpiece 🔥 We were also lucky enough to have one last year so we could compare for originality purposes that was non-rocking version
